Wax Straw-making Workshop

FREE WORKSHOP | Sunday, the 24th of September | 1300hrs (1:00pm)
Pre-registration by Monday, 18th of September

Say “Tak Nak Straw”, “不要吸管” or “No Straws”. Children ages 7 and above are invited to join a free wax straw-making workshop on Sunday, the 24th of September. Conducted by Carolyn Lau, founder of citizen-led initiative (under the Sampah Menyampah programme) from Kuala Lumpur, the workshop aims to encourage people to explore alternatives to plastic straws.

We need to rethink the habit of using plastic straws. It seems like such a small thing but single-use plastic straws are really bad for the environment. They don’t biodegrade and it takes hundreds of years to break down. They fill up landfills and end up in waterways and the ocean, which then endangers our marine life.

However, we only have 20 spaces and pre-registration is required.

Those who wish to join the workshop can submit their name and contact details to no later than Monday, 18th of September.

‘Straws’ will be screened on Sunday, 24th September at 12:30pm, immediately followed by the wax straw-making workshop.

Mount Kinabalu, the iconic mountain, is perhaps the most commanding sight on the island of Borneo. The mountain is a World Heritage site and a major tourist attraction. Every year tourists in thousands trek up its well-maintained trail to the highest point – the summit of Low’s Peak.

The BEFF Eco Art Carnival features the collaborative work of artists who will be showcasing eco-themed art installations. The carnival is also a great opportunity to check out and purchase the art and craftwork of local craftmakers and artisans. There will be three main art groups participating, namely Persatuan Seni Visual Sabah (PSVS), Decorative Art and Craft Club and the collective from University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF).

One of the artistic highlights in BEFF this year is an Orang Utan Art Installation, called ‘Love Me, Love My Home’ featuring painted portraits of Sabah’s iconic primate. These portraits – which are also for sale – will be symbolically hung on branches along the corridor leading to the venue, replicating the natural habitat of the Orang Utan. Visitors are invited to write and hang their eco-friendly pledge on these branches.

“We must acknowledge the fact that our world supports a huge variety of life and we need to respect this. We need to share and live together and not rob the animal kingdom of their natural heritage,” she said.
